Where Iron Sharpens Iron / Proverbs 27:17
Jesus entered a village where a woman whose name was Martha welcomed him. She had a sister named Mary who sat beside the Lord at his feet listening to him speak. Martha, burdened with much serving, came to him and said, “Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me by myself to do the serving? Tell her to help me.” The Lord said to her in reply, “Martha, Martha, you are anxious and worried about many things. There is need of only one thing. Mary has chosen the better part and it will not be taken from her.”
Sitting at the Feet of Jesus listening to Him speak His Word and Love into our Hearts is always, as Jesus puts it to Martha in the Gospels, the “better part”. Our work and service in this world can at times become a distraction from the Gospel of Jesus Christ. And, that was never God’s intention in the Garden of Eden when He introduced worked to Adam and then to Eve. Work and service are always supposed to bring us closer to Jesus – not further away. So, if we find that the whims of this world and our work is pulling us away from Jesus, we need to reevaluate what we’re doing and why we’re doing it – and, make sure that we’re sitting and listening to Jesus. Serving God first is always the “better part”. So, if we find ourselves “drifting” away from Him (e.g. perhaps as workaholics, social media addicts, sports fanatics, helicopter Parents, etc.), let’s be sure that we’re not putting anything (work, screen time, games, events, rules, etc.) before sitting at the Feet of Jesus.
