The Trailer

John 14:23-29:

Jesus said to his disciples: “Whoever loves me will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our dwelling with him. Whoever does not love me does not keep my words; yet the word you hear is not mine but that of the Father who sent me. “I have told you this while I am with you. The Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you everything and remind you of all that I told you. Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give it to you. Do not let your hearts be troubled or afraid. You heard me tell you, ‘I am going away and I will come back to you.’ If you loved me, you would rejoice that I am going to the Father; for the Father is greater than I. And now I have told you this before it happens, so that when it happens you may believe.”

I love movie trailers; the 1 – 3 minute video clip highlighting parts of a movie that might compel someone to go and see the actual movie.  While movie trailers aren’t the only reason that someone might go and see a movie, they certainly help to set the stage of expectations for movie-goers who might want to see the movie.  The Gospels, to me, are, at times, Movie Trailers with an All-Star Cast and the Biggest Name in Show Biz (or, put more Spiritually, the Biggest Name in Eternity) – God.  The Gospels follow the story of Jesus – a Man who claims to be God Himself – the I AM – and the plot twists from beginning to end have something for everyone.  You see, that’s the Beauty about the Gospel Movie…everyone will find something that they will love and identify with, and the Gospel Movie is just One of those Movies that you can keep watching over and over again learning something new each time (and identifying with It differently depending upon where you are on life’s journey).  It’s got romance, betrayal, action, adventure, comedy, drama, history, intrigue, music, etc.  But, I have to say, here is the “spoiler alert”…God loves all of the Characters in this Movie equally and will eventually one day bring all of Them back before Him and His Son, Jesus, to see how much They loved Him back.  And, this Movie is a “cliff-hanger” – we don’t really know where most of the Characters are now…  Now, leaving “Holy-wood” behind us in this metaphor, it is Awesome to hear the Words of Jesus and the Promises that He has made (and must keep) to those who love Him.  So, no matter what we think of the “Trailer”, we should “take heart” (per Jesus), because it’s just wonderful to know that He has overcome the world.  Jesus Promises that when we accept Him, He will help us move away from fear and give us a Peace that the world cannot give.  And, even though the Gospels are a bit of a “cliff-hanger”, the final Chapter (the Book of Revelation) in this Saga reveals it all; but, I won’t “spoil” that one for us – I’ll let everyone check that Trailer out for themselves…
