Where Iron Sharpens Iron / Proverbs 27:17
While the crowd was pressing in on Jesus and listening to the word of God, he was standing by the Lake of Gennesaret. He saw two boats there alongside the lake; the fishermen had disembarked and were washing their nets. Getting into one of the boats, the one belonging to Simon, he asked him to put out a short distance from the shore. Then he sat down and taught the crowds from the boat. After he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, “Put out into deep water and lower your nets for a catch.” Simon said in reply, “Master, we have worked hard all night and have caught nothing, but at your command I will lower the nets.” When they had done this, they caught a great number of fish and their nets were tearing. They signaled to their partners in the other boat to come to help them. They came and filled both boats so that the boats were in danger of sinking. When Simon Peter saw this, he fell at the knees of Jesus and said, “Depart from me, Lord, for I am a sinful man.” For astonishment at the catch of fish they had made seized him and all those with him, and likewise James and John, the sons of Zebedee, who were partners of Simon. Jesus said to Simon, “Do not be afraid; from now on you will be catching men.” When they brought their boats to the shore, they left everything and followed him.
On March 16th, hundreds of Men as Christ will be descending upon the city of Atlanta for an annual event called, “Men’s Morning of Spirituality”. The event is an annual affair that brings Men together around Christ in a Spirit of Fellowship to help to encourage Men on just how much Jesus Christ loves them and to turn the world of Spiritual apathy upside down. It is an awesome event that the Fishers of Men organization sponsors each year. Every city, town, and zip code have events that are conceptually just like these; and, every zip code could use more events for Christ. Knowing that the Victory has already been won in Jesus, we are called to confidently share His Truth with others. For His twelve (12) Apostles, Jesus didn’t pick Kings or Queens (e.g. CEO’s, Presidents); He didn’t pick the Religious Leaders (e.g. Pope, Priests, Pharisees, Sadducees); He didn’t pick Hero’s (e.g. Military Generals, Superbowl Quarterbacks). He picked a rag-tag Group of Men who would ultimately become Hero’s (and Saints) to all of us. He picked Men just like all of us and, just like back then, He’s still picking Men just like us to do the hard, Faithful Work in today’s world. So, in a Spirit of Ultimate Confidence, we must leave our worldly, fishing nets behind and follow Jesus. Catching someone for Jesus is Infinitely-Better than anything else we’ll ever do in this world. And, you don’t need a fishing license, formal training, etc. to do it – you only need Love.
