Back to the Beginning

Mark 10:2-16

The Pharisees approached Jesus and asked, “Is it lawful for a husband to divorce his wife?” They were testing him. He said to them in reply, “What did Moses command you?” They replied, “Moses permitted a husband to write a bill of divorce and dismiss her.” But Jesus told them, “Because of the hardness of your hearts he wrote you this commandment. But from the beginning of creation, God made them male and female. For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh. So they are no longer two but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, no human being must separate.” In the house the disciples again questioned Jesus about this. He said to them, “Whoever divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery against her; and if she divorces her husband and marries another, she commits adultery.” And people were bringing children to him that he might touch them, but the disciples rebuked them. When Jesus saw this he became indignant and said to them, “Let the children come to me; do not prevent them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these. Amen, I say to you, whoever does not accept the kingdom of God like a child will not enter it.” Then he embraced them and blessed them, placing his hands on them.

It’s very hard at times for us to recall our childhood memories in great detail.  There may be some highlights (and low-lights) that we can recall, but, for most of us, we tend to forget a lot of stuff.  And, as we age, the challenge of remembering becomes even more daunting.  My Dad once shared a story that he had read in a published article about how our brains our like home computers.  We only have so much storage (RAM) and, at times, we store things in our computers (brains) that take up space that we could be using for other things.  Our hard drives start to slow-down and we find it harder and harder to process some things quickly.  And, that’s right where satan wants us all.  He wants us to forget Where we came from and who our Real Father is.  He wants to load-up our hard drives (thoughts) with lots of unimportant stuff and, if he can get a few well-disguised lies into our PC’s during the process, even better!  There’s a reason they call it “mal-ware” – “mal” means in an unpleasant degree or in a faulty manner; “ware” means manufactured articles or articles offered for sale.  But, the “faulty sale” that the devil is after is for our Souls.  So, how do we battle this five-star general of evil?  By remembering again who God made us to be and that satan has already lost the battle with God.  I’d encourage all of you to find that old preschool or 1st grade photo of yourself.  The one of you with a $5 haircut and clothes that might just now be coming back into style.  Remember that little boy or little girl who knew Jesus so well.  Who was so sweet and always cared for others.  Who loved their Family and Friends more than anything and who would play with just about anyone that showed-up that day in the sandbox.  That’s who we all really are.  While the world has put some “tarnish” on us, with a little work, the dirt comes right off and, then, we’re just like New; some would say “Born Again”.  So, we’re all encouraged to “uninstall” and/or “disable” the evil “app” that satan got onto our hard drives.  By opening our PC’s (brain’s) Owner’s Manual (the Bible), we can know who God says that we really are.  There are endless examples of what God says about each of us in the pages found in Scripture.  The key to unlocking this Gift from God is simply to ask Him for help and let Him do the heavy-lifting.  He is always ready to help us as we are his co-workers and not His slaves (1 Corinthians 3:9); “For we are co-workers in God’s service; you are God’s field, God’s building.”
