Eternal Food

John 6:24-35

When the crowd saw that neither Jesus nor his disciples were there, they themselves got into boats and came to Capernaum looking for Jesus. And when they found him across the sea they said to him, “Rabbi, when did you get here?” Jesus answered them and said, “Amen, amen, I say to you, you are looking for me not because you saw signs but because you ate the loaves and were filled. Do not work for food that perishes but for the food that endures for eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you. For on him the Father, God, has set his seal.” So they said to him, “What can we do to accomplish the works of God?” Jesus answered and said to them, “This is the work of God, that you believe in the one he sent.” So they said to him, “What sign can you do, that we may see and believe in you? What can you do? Our ancestors ate manna in the desert, as it is written: He gave them bread from heaven to eat.” So Jesus said to them, “Amen, amen, I say to you, it was not Moses who gave the bread from heaven; my Father gives you the true bread from heaven. For the bread of God is that which comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.” So they said to him, “Sir, give us this bread always.” Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me will never hunger, and whoever believes in me will never thirst.”

For those of us who have known hunger, there is an incredible comfort in having daily meals and a full fridge and/or pantry.  When you go day to day not knowing if and when you’ll eat, you get hunger pangs.  These pangs are similar to the ones that we sometimes feel when we’re dieting or fasting.  You get so hungry that even the thought of food can drive you crazy.  Just watch the folks on those survival reality shows and you’ll see what that kind of hunger does to people.  It makes them so stressed that they are much more willing to compromise on their moral standards.  It can be a very dark Spiritual time for us when we hunger.  Jesus offers us the Bread of Life and we all hunger for it – whether or not we admit it.  We all need to be loved and then love in return.  It’s in our Spiritual DNA – our Souls.  So, when we don’t have the Eternal Food in our lives, we too sometimes make moral compromises and do the things that we don’t really want to do.  You see, without God and using our Spiritual Instructional Manuals (the Bible and the 10 Commandments), we don’t really operate our own equipment with His Authority.  It’s kind of like putting a lower grade gasoline in a high-performance vehicle.  If you ate nothing, but cupcakes and potato chips for the next year, you might not live to see the following year!?  Eating the Bread of Life and accepting His ingredients in your heart is a simple choice.  It’s what you’re meant to eat.  It’s the Fuel for your Soul and the foundation for your life.  So, taste and see the Goodness of the Lord in all that you do.  There isn’t any other food that will ever satisfy you like He can.
