A Working Vacation
Mark 6:30-34
The apostles gathered together with Jesus and reported all they had done and taught. He said to them, “Come away by yourselves to a deserted place and rest a while.” People were coming and going in great numbers, and they had no opportunity even to eat. So they went off in the boat by themselves to a deserted place. People saw them leaving and many came to know about it. They hastened there on foot from all the towns and arrived at the place before them. When he disembarked and saw the vast crowd, his heart was moved with pity for them, for they were like sheep without a shepherd; and he began to teach them many things.

We all have experienced a time when we were desperate for some time off – for a holiday. But, then, work “showed-up”. Work comes in all forms – especially in today’s digital age. It seems that there isn’t anywhere that we can go to escape the noise of the world. If you think about it even further, we never really ever take a full, all-out vacation. Even if we’re somewhere that a cell-phone tower and/or WIFI signal can’t reach us, people and our worries are still there. If it’s a Family vacation with the Kids, the Kids will have needs that need a tending to. If it’s just you and your mate, both you and your mate will have needs. We might take a “vacation-exemption” from certain things in our lives when we’re away from home and/or work, but we never really check-out 100%. We can’t. Jesus suggested a holiday to his Disciples and, within sight of the shore, they could see the multitude of people waiting for their boat to arrive. Jesus’ example to us is not that we shouldn’t rest – rest is a basic human need each and every day. His example was that no matter where we are and no matter what our plans are, people need our help and attention – especially when it comes to Christ. Jesus has a bigger plan for us than we could ever imagine. Jesus was both Divine and human, but, being in human form, even He needed rest. He was constantly going away to pray independently while resting in His Father. But, Jesus is still always there when we need Him – just like He was during His Ministry on earth. When God presents us with an opportunity to serve Him and others, we should do our best to reach-out and snatch it. If we’re too tired, God understands – just remember, He never gives us more than we can handle. So, if you’re finding it hard to keep on “keeping on” at times, just rest in Him and let Him work through you to do His will. It’s always the Right choice.
