Three Tents
Mark 9:2-10
Jesus took Peter, James, and John and led them up a high mountain apart by themselves. And he was transfigured before them, and his clothes became dazzling white, such as no fuller on earth could bleach them. Then Elijah appeared to them along with Moses, and they were conversing with Jesus. Then Peter said to Jesus in reply, “Rabbi, it is good that we are here! Let us make three tents: one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.” He hardly knew what to say, they were so terrified. Then a cloud came, casting a shadow over them; from the cloud came a voice, “This is my beloved Son. Listen to him.” Suddenly, looking around, they no longer saw anyone but Jesus alone with them. As they were coming down from the mountain, he charged them not to relate what they had seen to anyone, except when the Son of Man had risen from the dead. So they kept the matter to themselves, questioning what rising from the dead meant.
Three Tents
As much as Jesus took off alone in the Bible, He was never fully-alone. On top of the mountain during His transfiguration, He had Peter, James, and John and then expanded His group to include Elijah and Moses and, then, even God Himself. Everywhere Christ went, He was always at least with God and the Holy Spirit, but He always seemed to attract an audience. In the Garden of Gethsemane, Jesus started the evening in prayer with God with Peter, James, and John nearby, but then expanded His friend group again to include the Holy Spirit, Angels, Judas Iscariot, and a whole host of folks from the High Priest’s group. You see, even when we think that we’re alone, there are always at least three tents right there with us – one for Jesus, one for God, and one for the Holy Spirit. We are never truly-alone even though at times it feels like we are in this world And, the best way to expand your Friend group whether in your Family or community, at Church, at work, or on social media, is to share the Word of God. Jesus didn’t come evangelizing about the Kingdom of Heaven with a mega-phone, via a mass telemarketing or mail campaign, or via social media. No, He simply shared His Father’s love with others. We are all called to share, as well. While some won’t want to continue in your Friend group(s) when you share your Faith, you’ll be surprised by some of the ones that do. Some might even call those surprises “Miracles”.
