Let Him
Mark 1:29-39
On leaving the synagogue Jesus entered the house of Simon and Andrew with James and John. Simon’s mother-in-law lay sick with a fever. They immediately told him about her. He approached, grasped her hand, and helped her up. Then the fever left her and she waited on them. When it was evening, after sunset, they brought to him all who were ill or possessed by demons. The whole town was gathered at the door. He cured many who were sick with various diseases, and he drove out many demons, not permitting them to speak because they knew him. Rising very early before dawn, he left and went off to a deserted place, where he prayed. Simon and those who were with him pursued him and on finding him said, “Everyone is looking for you.” He told them, “Let us go on to the nearby villages that I may preach there also. For this purpose have I come.” So he went into their synagogues, preaching and driving out demons throughout the whole of Galilee.

Continuing upon last week’s theme (“The Power to Rebuke”), we find Jesus this week on a “hot-streak” (pun intended) of driving-out demons. Scripture doesn’t say, “He warned the demons” or “He gave the demons a hard-stare”. Scripture says that “He drove out many demons” and “He went into their synagogues, preaching and driving out demons throughout the whole of Galilee.” He was cleaning-house and kicking some serious demon butt. That’s pretty cool. But, here’s the thing. The same Power that conquered the grave lives in all of us. The “key” is believing that death has been overcome by Christ and then tapping-into it on a daily basis. We can cast out demons. Anyone’s who’s had any direct experience with Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) or Al-Anon, for example, have probably witnessed an exorcism when someone they love finally breaks free from the darkness. They are freed by surrendering to Him, rather than fighting the demons themselves. They realized that the odds were stacked against them and they’ve called for Reinforcements (in the form of Jesus Christ and His Angels, Saints, etc.). You see, none of us wants to struggle with addiction or be mean and/or nasty with folks without cause. That’s the darkness; the demons. They only have one job – to seek the ruin of our Souls 24/7. As we all struggle with the demons in our own lives, we need to remember that God conquered death for all of us, so that we might live for Him. As humans, we couldn’t do that for ourselves, so we need to be one of the quick (to ask Him) and not one of the dead (who might try to do it on our own). To finish, our Friends in AA have the best mantra that I’ve ever heard; it’s “Let Him”. So, let Him.
