Where Iron Sharpens Iron / Proverbs 27:17
After John had been arrested, Jesus came to Galilee proclaiming the gospel of God: “This is the time of fulfillment. The kingdom of God is at hand. Repent, and believe in the gospel.” As he passed by the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and his brother Andrew casting their nets into the sea; they were fishermen. Jesus said to them, “Come after me, and I will make you fishers of men.” Then they abandoned their nets and followed him. He walked along a little farther and saw James, the son of Zebedee, and his brother John. They too were in a boat mending their nets. Then he called them. So they left their father Zebedee in the boat along with the hired men and followed him.
I love fishing. There is just something exhilarating about being on the water with the Lord (and possibly a few Friends) enjoying God’s creation and the feeling of getting a “hit” on your line. At first, you’re not sure what is on the other end – it’s almost like unwrapping a gift on Christmas morning. The anticipation of what you’ll find is such a rush of adrenaline! I suppose it was the same for the Apostles when they cast their nets into the water hoping to bring in a load of beautiful fish. If finding a fish on the other end of your line or in your nets is exciting, imagine how much stronger the feeling is when you bring a new Believer to Christ!? Whether you’re “Fishing” for others or “Fishing” for yourself matters not – what matters most is the moment that you know that you’ve got something on your “Line” and now need to bring “It” into your “Boat”, onto your “Dock” or “Shore”, etc. You sensed the nibbles and tugs on the bait and/or net that you and the Lord had prepared for the “Catch”. And, now it’s time to set the “Hook” and reel them in. I am constantly watching deep sea experts reel-in Tuna and all sorts of big game fish; it’s an amazing effort. The zeal that they share when they board that fish is just incredible. But, “Boarding” one new Believer trumps it all. God shared that, “Whoever turns a sinner from the error of his way will save his soul from death and cover over a multitude of sins.” (James 5:20) There are no scales on Earth that express the “Weight” of that catch!
