Table Scraps

Gospel / Matthew 15:21-28

At that time, Jesus withdrew to the region of Tyre and Sidon. And behold, a Canaanite woman of that district came and called out, “Have pity on me, Lord, Son of David! My daughter is tormented by a demon.” But Jesus did not say a word in answer to her. Jesus’ disciples came and asked him, “Send her away, for she keeps calling out after us.” He said in reply, “I was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.” But the woman came and did Jesus homage, saying, “Lord, help me.” He said in reply, “It is not right to take the food of the children and throw it to the dogs.” She said, “Please, Lord, for even the dogs eat the scraps that fall from the table of their masters.” Then Jesus said to her in reply, “O woman, great is your faith! Let it be done for you as you wish.” And the woman’s daughter was healed from that hour.

If you get hungry enough, you’ll eat just about anything.  If you’ve ever watched a survival realty show, seen an in-depth homeless living report, etc., you know what I mean.  You really know what I mean if you ever been that “hungry” person.  Calories, fat and sugar content, likes, and dislikes go right out the window when you’re starving.  In Jesus’ day, people were “Starving” for a Messiah – especially the Jewish people.  Rome was in power and the Jews were constantly battling with their Roman authorities.  Jerusalem would never return to its former Glory until the Messiah came back to reconcile His people to Him.  They were “Hungry” for Redemption.  It didn’t take long for the Gentiles to see what Jesus was doing – performing Miracles as He went from town to town.  The Table Scraps that were dropping all around them were enough to get their attention and some, like this Mother, not only answered the Call, but they also passed the Test.  Jesus wanted to know “how” Hungry this woman was…how much she wanted to save her Daughter.  “O woman, great is your faith!”  Wouldn’t it be great to hear the Lord say those very words to us someday – “great is your faith!”  Let’s continue to look for the Table Scraps in life that God gives to us each and every day.  While they might seem like Scraps to us, the grand sum of answering those Calls from Christ could lead to an Eternal Meal with Jesus in Heaven!
